Routes to belonging in higher education: connecting the local to the global context

Dr Rebecca Murray, Department of Sociological Studies, University of Sheffield

18th June | 18:00 | Soft Ground

Join Dr Rebecca Murray and colleagues from the migration, education and charity sectors at this panel discussion on ‘sanctuary’ in higher education.

According to UNHCR (2023) estimates, 108.4 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced in 2022 - an increase of 19 million from 2021. In response to this ongoing crisis, universities around the world have established ‘sanctuary initiatives’ designed to create pathways into higher education for people with precarious immigration status.

The panel will explore sanctuary initiatives from multiple perspectives, and look at how the hospitality provided by universities in our region can continue in the UK’s increasingly ‘hostile environment’.
