ABOUT THE EVENT

For Khalida Popal, football is a force for good.

The co-founder of the Afghanistan women’s national football team empowers refugee and migrant girls and women through her movement for equality.

Despite being forced into exile because of her activism, she leads a global movement for equality through sport, the Girl Power Organisation.

Khalida will share her incredible story in conversation with Liz Ward, just before the FIFA World Cup England vs Ghana kick-off.

There will also be an opportunity to buy Khalida’s award-winning book, My Beautiful Sisters, sharing the moving stories of Afghan women who dared to play and resist.

  • Khalida Popal is the founder of Girl Power Organisation and former captain & co-founder of the Afghanistan’s women’s national football team.

A leading voice for women’s rights in sport, she was forced into exile due to her activism. From exile, she continues to build a global movement using football as a tool for empowerment, leadership, and inclusion for refugee and migrant women and girls.

Khalida is also the author of the award-winning sports book of the year, My Beautiful Sisters, which tells the powerful story of Afghan women who fought for the right to play, speak, and be seen.

  • I'm obsessed with creating conversations that lead to transformational change. Be that through facilitation, consultancy or leadership development, I believe in the certainty that every single human has the potential to grow, learn and develop in ways they didn't realize were capable.

I grew up in Handsworth, inner city Birmingham, UK then made an early childhood transfer deal to St Helens, in the North West of England. I am the proud daughter of a single parent, and fly both the Ireland and St Kitts flag on any given day.

I grew up in communities that face the sharp end of marginalization and this is what drives me to create those conversations that build empathy and understanding. I've spent the last decade working across the youth sector, sports world, and the charity sector delivering work that leaves people inspired and motivated to make the world a better place.
