ABOUT THE SHOW
Fragments of Identity' is a series of ten oil portraits, featuring the stories of migrants and refugees to or within Europe. The project conceived by British artist, Madeleina Kay, has been delivered as part of her MA Fine Art research at Central Saint Martins and celebrates the diverse identities of the participants whilst exploring the challenges and hostility migrants too often face. Madeleina interviewed the participants about their experiences of migration, cruelty and discrimination, as well as their perception of home, community and belonging. The ten participants chose the symbolic colours of their portrait to represent and celebrate their identities.

Madeleina Kay is an artist and activist, awarded ‘Young European of the year’ (2018) studying MA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins (awarded Student Rep of the Year 2024). In 2019, she was awarded a ‘Democracy Needs Imagination’ grant from the European Cultural Foundation to deliver her project ‘The Future is Europe’, which was awarded the Charlemagne Youth Prize (2020) by the European Parliament and Karlspreis Foundation. She has written, illustrated and self-published nine books and contributed writing to the German National Library’s ‘House of Europe’ book (2020), amongst other publications. She has written and performed songs at events across Europe, including ‘The Right to Vote’ exhibition opening at the National Justice Museum, UK (2018), Glastonbury Festival, UK (2019), Aachen Town Hall (2022), the European Parliament (2023) and Stormont, NI Assembly (2024). Madeleina is also a member of pan-European art collective, Dare to Care who deliver work on the topic of mental health.
