Layering Memories.层叠的记忆
Phoebe Shu-Ching Chan
21-28 June | Time: 12:00 - 17:00 | Venue: Soft Ground
ABOUT THE SHOW
Layering Memories.层叠的记忆 is a living, interactive installation crafted from delicate hand-cut red paper formed into a tree-shaped art piece that transforms throughout the festival. Beginning as a solitary cultural artifact, it gradually blossoms into a vibrant tapestry of collective experience through workshops under the canopy. Visitors contribute their paper creations to this evolving tree, using traditional Chinese paper-cutting to share individual stories. These stories intertwine through symbolic motifs and intricate patterns, creating a visual symphony that transcends cultural boundaries and celebrates our interconnected human experience.
This exhibition forms a part of our full exhibition & installation line-up at Soft Ground, including:
Madeleina Kay - Fragments of Identity: Portraits of Migration

Phoebe Shu-Ching Chan is a Taiwanese-Australian creative practitioner and visual artist working in theatre and performance art, currently based in London. Her work embraces an interdisciplinary approach, blending theatre, movement, and technology to transform spaces into storytelling environments, creating visually compelling and immersive landscapes.
The themes of her work are shaped by the interplay of diverse cultures and philosophies from her bicultural upbringing. She explores contrasts between Chinese cultural philosophy, folklore traditions, Western identities, and contemporary perspectives through juxtaposing physical materials to find harmony and balance. Her background in costume and performance studies has deeply influenced her approach to creating purposeful art and exploring historical craft.
Building on her experience in youth and family theatre, Chan explores the intersection of theatrical design and installation art, passionately developing participatory workshops that engage communities in storytelling. Through an emphasis on concept and emotion, she works with diverse techniques and carefully selected textiles and materials. Her evolving practice extends her theatrical background into new territories, creating intimate connections with participants through art.
Her notable performance work includes: Drifting. 漂浮 2023 (Resolution Festival), Dual (Aesthetica Film Festival 2018) , Cultural Duality (photography)
