ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Foundations is a pop-up exhibition exploring the cultural impact of Caribbean sound system heritage in the UK. Presented by Nate Coltrane, the installation brings together a curated listening station, oral history interviews, behind-the-scenes gallery and a visual archive including the iconic 100 Covers from Greensleeves Records.

The exhibition centres on sound system culture as a form of social infrastructure, tracing its role in shaping community, identity and collective experience. Through sound, image and storytelling, Foundations invites audiences to engage with the voices, histories and creative legacies that continue to influence British culture today.

Foundations is produced in association with Greensleeves Records.

  • Nate Coltrane is a Nottingham-based artist and curator, and founder of Our Yard; a platform exploring the positive impact of immigration on UK culture through the lens of Caribbean sound system heritage. His work centres on documenting and amplifying the voices, stories and cultural contributions of the Windrush generation and their descendants.

His recent exhibition Foundations, presented at New Art Exchange, brings this work into a physical space through a combination of oral history interviews, immersive sound, archive and visual installation. The exhibition positions sound system culture as a form of social infrastructure, tracing how it has shaped community, identity and collective experience in Britain.

Through Our Yard, Coltrane has developed an ongoing body of interviews with key cultural figures including Sir Lloyd Coxsone, Don Letts, Channel One, Mad Professor and Dennis Bovell. These conversations have been shared through broadcast platforms including Mixcloud and Rinse FM, creating an accessible archive of lived experience and cultural memory.

Working across exhibition, audio and moving image, his practice is rooted in cultural preservation, storytelling and community engagement. His work continues to create space for underrepresented histories, connecting past and present through sound, archive and lived experience.
