ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

This exhibition shows three large handmade flags created by people seeking sanctuary in Sheffield, accompanied by a unique sound piece.

During the 1990’s road protests, activists created the Union Jill flag – a flag based on the Union Jack, but woven from the colours of historical resistance movements. It represented a “multicultural, creative, and alternative Britain”.

People seeking sanctuary in Sheffield have joined artists Komarine Romdenh-Romluc and Ian Nesbitt to sew three large Union Jila (a Persian name symbolising heritage) flags, using colours that are important to their own personal and cultural heritage.

The flags are exhibited during the festival, accompanied by a sound piece recorded during the sewing workshops, featuring conversations around journeys of migration, and making a home in Sheffield.
