The Union Jila Project

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
During the 1990’s road protests, activists created the Union Jill flag – a flag based on the Union Jack, but woven from the colours of historical resistance movements. It represented a “multicultural, creative, and alternative Britain”.
People seeking sanctuary in Sheffield have joined artists Komarine Romdenh-Romluc and Ian Nesbitt to sew three large Union Jila* flags, using colours that are important to their own personal and cultural heritage.
The flags are exhibited during the festival, accompanied by a sound piece recorded during the sewing workshops, featuring conversations around journeys of migration, and making a home in Sheffield.
* Jila = Persian name symbolising heritage
